Dr. Mitch Lerner

Professor of History

Director of the Mershon Center for International Security Studies

Stamps Eminence Faculty Fellow

What is your role in the Stamps Eminence Scholarship Program?
I teach the second-semester Stamps Eminence course for first-year students. During their first semester, students build a foundation by learning about Ohio State, Columbus, and some of the challenges facing the community. In my class, we build on that knowledge by exploring different approaches to addressing those issues. I also help students continue developing as teams, think strategically about their projects and build momentum so they're prepared to take meaningful next steps during the summer and into their second year.

What do you hope students gain from the experience?
I challenge students to think outside the box and question some of the assumptions they may have about the problems we face and how those problems can be solved. Ultimately, these students will be leaders in the next generation, and I hope they leave with strong connections to one another, practical and theoretical experience, and a perspective that helps shape not only their time at Ohio State but also the rest of their lives.

What advice would you give to incoming Stamps Eminence Scholars?
Embrace every opportunity that comes your way and keep an open mind. One of the most inspiring parts of this program is how motivated the students are. Seeing them take advantage of the opportunities available through Stamps Eminence and Ohio State, and watching them grow into accomplished scholars and leaders, is incredibly rewarding. My advice is to follow those opportunities wherever they lead and see what new experiences and ideas you discover along the way.
