Student Spotlight: Katie McGreal

Katie McGreal has always been interested in science and medicine. McGreal knew that The Ohio State University and the Biological Sciences Scholars Program would give her the opportunities to create a future full of opportunities in medicine. Now, McGreal is using what she has learned to prepare for medical school and the chance to make the world a better place.

Why did you choose The Ohio State University?

I wanted a big school with both strong academics and school spirit. Additionally, I wanted to go to school with great research opportunities, a major hospital, and other opportunities. I have always been interested in science and medicine, and I knew majoring in biology would give me the best background for my future endeavors. I knew Ohio State would provide me with a great education and all the resources I need to grow as a student and be successful after college.

Why did you pick Honors and Scholars?

I came from a really small high school, and I was looking for a smaller community of people and also people who had similar interests and majors. I knew Scholars would help to deepen my college experience and help me make connections with my classmates.

How has The Ohio State Scholars Program contributed to your college experience?

Scholars has had an immense impact on my Ohio State experience. Being in the Biological Sciences Scholars made the transition to college so much easier and has made my experience amazing. Scholars has brought me some of my best friends, study partners, and mentors. I have had the opportunity to volunteer, tour hospitals and labs, learn from alumni, attend guest lectures, and participate in social events. Through Scholars networking and classes, I began working in a research lab at the James. Almost every science class I have taken I knew another person from my Scholars program who was also in the class. I have so many great memories from living with my program freshman year and attending study sessions and other social events. I have gotten to mentor younger students and share my Ohio State knowledge with others. I am so thankful for Scholars and the impact it has had on my Ohio State experience.

What is your why for wearing a mask?

I care about my fellow Buckeyes and I want to see us on campus for as long as possible.

What does #TogetherAsBuckeyes mean to you?

#TogetherAsBuckeyes is coming together as a Buckeye community to keep us all safe, healthy, and on campus.

What student organizations are you involved with?

I am on the club swimming team, I am a part of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, I am a BuckeyeThon Team Captain, I am on the Health and Safety Committee of Undergraduate Student Government, and I am helping to found a new organization called Partners In Health Engage.

Are there any professors or staff who have helped you?

My Scholars advisor and biology advisor Melissa Basford has always been there to answer all of my questions and guide me down the right path!

What are your goals and plans for the future?

I hope to attend medical school and also pursue a Master of Public Health.  I would love to work as a primary care physician, do public health research, and advocate for global public health and healthcare reform.
