Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

Overview

The Goldwater Foundation awards up to 460 scholarships to sophomores and juniors demonstrating potential for success in a research career in the sciences, engineering, or mathematics. Competitive students will have a high GPA (3.8+), research experience, and intend to pursue a PhD and research career. The scholarship awards $7,500 towards undergraduate expenses per year of college remaining. Ohio State will nominate 4-5 applicants for this award.

Goldwater Scholarship

Eligibility

  • U.S citizen, national, or permanent resident
  • Full-time sophomore or junior (1-2 years of study remaining after applying)
  • 3.0 GPA or higher (3.8 or higher, highly recommended)
  • Intend to pursue a research career in a natural science, mathematics or engineering

Selection Criteria

Goldwater Scholarship selection criteria include:

  • Strong academics
  • Extensive research experience (3+ semester including summers and/or high school)
  • Capable of becoming future leaders and innovators in the natural sciences, engineering, and/or mathematics

Application Materials

  • A completed application (short answer questions about career goals/professional aspirations, research projects (including publications), recognitions, non-research accomplishments and skills, future academic plans, coursework, research skills)
  • Research essay: a chance to discuss previous research or proposed research (three pages; guidance here)
  • Three letters of recommendation from research mentors or STEM professors/course instructors (See guidance here under Step #4.) that will be emailed directly to fellowships@osu.edu.
  • Official Transcript
  • Permanent resident card and letter of intent to become a citizen, if applicable

Campus Application Process

Because the university is required to nominate candidates for this opportunity, there is an internal application process. For support on your application, reach out to fellowships@osu.edu at any time while the applications are open.

Please submit all of the materials listed above, including letters of recommendation, to fellowships@osu.edu by 5 pm on the campus deadline. After a review of applications, we will contact all applicants to announce the campus nominee. From that point, Undergraduate Fellowship Office staff will work with nominee to revise materials in advance of the national deadline.

National Application Deadline – January 26, 2024

All application materials must be submitted to fellowships@osu.edu in advance of the national deadline. Undergraduate Fellowship Office staff will communicate about deadlines with nominee.
