Why Study Abroad?
The University Honors & Scholars Center encourages students to broaden their
education by studying abroad and offers short-term study abroad programs

Honors & Scholars Nicaragua
This short-term study abroad program is for students in the Honors or Scholars programs who would like to deepen their academic and intercultural
understanding, take on global civic responsibility and gain experience working with people from different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
in Nicaragua. In this course students will engage in the issues that surround extreme poverty by focusing on their consumer choices and the impact
it has on the Nicaraguan communities that the students will visit. Students will enroll in International Studies 215 (5 credits) taught by Dr.
Connie De Jong during spring quarter 2012. The course will explore the history, politics, economics and arts of Nicaragua as well as theories of
development, post-development, sustainable development and the free vs. fair trade debates. Enrollment in this course includes an expectation that
students will perform 2 ½ hours of community engagement each week focused on Fair Trade. Students will earn an additional 5 credit hours of
International Studies 697 for the overseas component in Nicaragua.
