Ariel Callion
Becoming a part of the International Affairs Scholars Program has been the best decision I’ve made at Ohio State. Since I am a Columbus native, I had never thought to stay in the city, let alone the state, but after taking a tour and learning about the many opportunities, organizations, and majors offered, Ohio State was definitely the place for me.

As an incoming International Studies major, the International Affairs program seemed to be a perfect fit for me. I have always been passionate about international issues, world travel, and learning about other cultures. I was excited to become a part of a group that shared those same interests, it definitely made the transition from high school to college much easier, and because we live together there’s always a friend around.

Another wonderful aspect of the International Affairs Scholars Program is our coordinator, Debra Bermann. Debra is an advocate for everyone in the program, and it is comforting to know that at this big university there is someone looking out for you who really cares. She keeps students connected to great opportunities, and offers help in whatever way she can.

Through IA (International Affairs), I’ve had some amazing experiences. I was able to hear former ambassador to Norway, John Ong, present, see international bands/artists, speak with organizations that promote international fair trade (Global Gallery), and that’s hardly the half of it! I’ve also been able to travel to places like Washington DC, Chicago, Toronto, Southeastern China, Brazil, and now Senegal, all equally great, but very different in what I took in, and how I developed as a result of them. Being a part of IA- Scholars has been helpful with giving me direction in career aspirations as well as enabling me to meet life-long friends, realize my dream of traveling the world, and gain experiences and memories I will treasure for the rest of my life.

Editor’s Note:

Ariel Callion has certainly found ways to expand her community beyond her Columbus, Ohio roots during her time at Ohio State. As a member of the International Affairs Scholars Program, Ariel has taken three classes focused on the culture of very different regions of the world which culminated in short-term study abroad experiences in Hong Kong and Southern China, Brazil and Senegal. She is currently enrolled in a Slavic Studies course learning about Eastern Europe before spending spring break in Bulgaria with fellow IA-Scholars. Through her role with the University Housing Black Student Association, Ariel helps provide opportunities for African American students living on campus to attend programs that reflect their culture and fellowship with one another. She also serves as a resident advisor in Mack Hall working closely with younger International Affairs Scholars helping them transition effectively to life on a college campus. Additionally, Ariel works on international service projects as a member of Rotaract which is sponsored by the Columbus Rotary Club. Although she spends a fair amount of time developing her passion for global issues, volunteering and mentoring her peers, Ariel is in line to graduate cum laude this spring! Clearly a humanist and a scholar, we could not be more proud of Ariel Callion and her accomplishments.
