First year students in the Honors and Scholars programs are invited to participate in a short term study
abroad experience in Brazil. The GEC course Portuguese 330 (5 credits) will be offered during winter
quarter and will be mandatory for students enrolled in this study abroad opportunity. The course (taught
by Professor Lucia Costigan of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese) will focus on the historical
and cultural importance of Brazil with emphasis on the Amazon and Northeastern regions of the country.
Following winter quarter, students will go on a study tour to Brazil over spring break where sites will be visited in Manaus, Salvador da Bahia and Rio de Janeiro. Highlights of the trip include:
- Boat trip on the Amazon
- Day trip to colonial town of Cachoeira
- Lectures at universities in Brazil
- And, of course, the many sites of Manuas, Salvador da Bahia and Rio de Janeiro
